Physical vapor deposition coatings are used in many areas of industry.
Many different materials can be coated using PVD technology:
- Metals
- Alloys
- Plastics
- Ceramics
- Glass
In tool and mold making and in the field of machining, the cutting materials for the tools are coated. Furthermore, the dies in the coin industry are coated, on the one hand for a longer service life, and on the other hand to replace galvanic chrome plating.
In microelectronics, PVD coatings are used to create metal or (organic) semiconductor layers. Data carriers such as hard disks, CDs and BlueRays are also coated with PVD protective layers.
As surface and wear protection – e.g. polyethylene films of chip bags contain a thin PVD layer as a vapor barrier, or architectural glass and displays are also coated with protective layers.
